Hawaii is a state located in the Pacific Ocean. It is an island and was the last state to be admitted to the Union. Before being admitted to the Union in the mid-1900s, the island was its own nation where it has its own government. Prior to being a U.S. state, many Hawaiians grew angry with the way the government was being run. Several leaders were wealthy white citizens.
They were also given more rights than the Asians that lived there. As a result, a constitution was forced to be signed by the leader who was the current rules of Hawaii. That person was Kalakua. He continued to lead the islands until he died in the late 1800s. In 1893, leaders forced the United States to annex Hawaii.
