Bacteriostatic- inhibits the growth of bacteria, and immune system of host must destroy the bacteriocidal kills bacteria, the bacteriocidal may work by weakening the cell wall so that as the cell grows it will burst, if the cells growth is inhibited by a bacteriostatic then the cell will not grow and the bacteriocidal will not be able to destroy the pathogen the choice determines on how quickly each drug works, and if it will prevent further host damage. bacteriocidal may take longer but once it starts working the cell will be destroyed, this still leaves time for host to be damage where as a bacteriostatic may not destroy pathogen but may stop its damaging effects quickly. drugs can also change from cidal to static depending on bacteria being targeted
