Australia was originally a large continent used for prison by the British. Those early colonial early British, right? Australia was originally used as a prison because of its harsh conditions. It was a kind of life sentence but even the journey was harsh. Ships would be brought over overflowing with prisoners, and only about half would make the trip because of poor sanitary conditions and a lack of understanding of hygiene for a long trip like that.
It’d take about two months by ship to reach Australia from Britain - especially since the ships had to go all the way around the tip of Africa. However, the plan backfired. People started to figure out how to enjoy Australia’s climate and environment. It soon became a place that people wanted to visit.
