This theory was put forward by Alfred Wegener. It basically explains how continents could shift positions on the surface of the earth. It would explain how the world went from Pangea (where all the continents were basically one landmass) to how the world is set up today, with seven distinct continents.

Despite being right about the idea that rocks, fossils, and plants have been found on one continent that bare similarities to things found on another one - not just small similiarities, but similarities that couldn’t be explained except by having them be from close regions - he was wrong on a few things. He was denounced in 1915 for unknown reasons. He would later be proven right as to his theory about all the continents having been one super landmass - what is now called Pangea.

Alfred Wegner saw that Pangaea split into Laurasia and Gondwanaland 1) continents fit together 2) Similar geology 3) Dinosaurs spread out but mammals in one place.
