About 73% of Japan is covered in mountains of some form. Japan is made up of many little islands, and at least 430 of them are inhabited. In total, there are 6,852 islands in the nation of Japan. A few of the islands are under dispute, and one of these island chains - the Senkaku Islands - is being claimed by both Japan and China.
The highest peak in Japan is Mount Fuji - which peaks at 12,388 feet high.
The Japanese Alps are a mountain chain that run through a couple of the islands. Mount Fuji is also a dormant volcano, and has been dormant since 1707. The other side of the island chains are low plateaus and rolling hills, like what is seen in the movies when there aren’t mountains in a scene set in Japan.
