Hindi is the third official language of Fiji. It is more often spoken by those in Fiji who have an Indian heritage. Oftentimes, this means one or both parents were Indian, or there are Indian parents somewhere in their lineage. It is the third and final official language of the country, which was a British colony until 1997.
The constitution written then defined the official languages as English, Fijian, and Hindi. English is more commonly spoken in schools, government, and other official venues. Fijian and Hindi, on the other hand, are more often spoken at home when the families have heritage as native Fijian or Indian that have migrated to Fiji. Other languages are spoken in the country, but these are the three most common.
