The kind of method with the scale written as number of inches: number of feet is the ratio or representative fraction method. In this method, the distance indicates the relationship between the distance on a map and the distance on the land or ground. The ratio method is always written with the distance of the map as 1 and followed by a unit of measure that can either be inches, yards, meters and so on and so forth.
A ratio of 1/10,000 or 1:10,000 means that one unit of measure on a certain map is equivalent to 10,000 units of the same measurement on the ground. The ratio method is a form of scale usually used in the Map Collection.
