The outer layer of the Earth is known as the crust. It is the outermost solid shell of the Earth and is composed of sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks. The Earth’s crust has two distinctive types: the continental and oceanic crusts. The continental crust is the layer of sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks which forms our continents and shallow seabed known as continental shelves while the oceanic crust is the uppermost layer of the tectonic plate of the portion of the ocean.
These two crusts boat “float on the mantle” – this means that the crust floats at a certain elevation depending on its density and thickness. Since the continental crust is thicker, it extends to greater depth and elevation than the oceanic crust.
