North Kivu is the name of the geographic area in the Democratic Republic of Congo which is most affected by rebel activities. It is a province which borders Lake Kivu and the provinces of Ituri, Tshopo, Maniema and South Kivu. It has a total area of 56,483 square kilometers with a total population of more than 5 million people. North Kivu used to be a sub-region in the Kivu region and has since been unstable due to many military conflicts.
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, North Kivu has an alarming rate of internally displaced people due to fighting between the government army and the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda rebels which recruits child soldiers.
