Palm Islands is the name of the oddly shaped resort in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The idea of constructing a manmade island came from Sheikh Mohammed, the Emir and the prime minister of Dubai, for the purpose of turning the city into a world-class tourist attraction. The Palm Islands will consist of three artificial islands – Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel and Palm Deira. The creation of these three islands started in 2001.
However, the only island which is open to visitors is the Palm Jumeirah, a land created by Nakheel, a local real estate corporation. Palm Jebel Ali’s construction began in 2002 but it’s still under construction as of this day. Palm Deira is the largest of all three islands. Since it is so large, it was being developed in several phases with the Deira Island as its first phase. As of 2008, 80% of the island’s front reclamation had been completed but the project has been put on hold since then.
