After Alaska, Hawaii was admitted to the United States in 1959. It is the only state found in the ocean. Hawaii consists of eight islands including Maui, Hawaii, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai, Nihau, and Kaho’olawe. Many people worked on plantations. Due to the good hot weather and the rain, many crops would grow. However, due to the harsh working conditions on the plantations, many people were against their plantation owners.
The Republican party favored these plantation owners. Then the workers favored the Democratic Party of Hawaii. This led to the people of Hawaii asking for statehood. In March of 1959, the act was admitted and then the U.S. put it to a vote allowing the residents of Hawaii to vote whether to allow Hawaii to come into the U.S. Over 94% voted yes for Hawaiian statehood.
