Located in Russia, Lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world. At its deepest point, Lake Baikal measures over 5,000 feet deep. It is also a very clear lake. The lake is believed to be over 25 million years old. Part of the lake is below sea level. Due to its location, the lake may freeze based on the temperature. Many different plants and animals live in and around the lake.
Some of these plants include the marsh thistle and different types of green algae. Some of the surrounding animals include the red fox, marmot and over 60 species of fish. In history, a couple of different tribes are believed to be the first humans to come in contact with the lake.
