Canada is a large country that has a long coastline. It actually has the longest coastline compared to any other country in the world. Canada has many islands and is surrounded by water on most sides including the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Arctic Ocean and a few smaller bodies of water. Having a long coastline seems to be beneficial because that allows for a lot of fishing opportunities.
However, that also means that there is a greater chance of having weather-related incidents like hurricanes and tsunamis. Coastlines are also harder to guard than land. Therefore, many more stations have to be set up along the coastlines compared to countries that are landlocked or have a much smaller coastline. Coastlines can also be beneficial in that they have more beaches.
Canada has the longest coastline of any country in the world. It runs about 71,000 kilometers long. Since it borders the United States, Canada is not completely surrounded by water compared to other countries like Australia and Japan. Canada has several bodies of water that surround parts of its coast including three of the five oceans which are Arctic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean.
In other areas it is surrounded by bays and seas. The Hudson Bay dips down to Ontario and Quebec while Beaufort Sea and Baffin Bay are in the northern part of the Canadian coastline. Part of the reason for the long coastline also deals with the size of the country. Even though some countries are completely surrounded by water, Canada is a much larger country.
Canadas coastline is 125,566 miles long, 70,777 miles of which are Nunavuts. Its coastline is only 3,400 miles short of being four times as long as Indonesia, which has the worlds second longest coastline.
