The body of water located south of Europe and north of Africa is the Mediterranean Sea. It is connected to the Atlantic Ocean but it is considered as a separate body of water. Studies revealed that based on geological evidence, the Mediterranean Sea was cut off from the Atlantic Ocean more than 5 million years ago and it wasn’t until the Zanclean flood refilled it about 5 million years ago.
Now, it is almost completely enclosed by land and is located between Southern Europe and Anatolia on the north and North Africa on the south. Some of the different countries with coastlines on the Mediterranean Sea are as follows: Bosnia, Algeria, Albania, Italy, Greece, France, Libya, Malta, Montenegro, Slovenia, Spain, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey.
