The two largest African nations in the Republic of South Africa are the Zulu and the Xhosa. They are part of Nguni, one of the four major ethnic divisions in South Africa, which represents more or less two thirds of the Black population in South Africa. The other three major ethnic divisions are Sotho, Shangaan-Tsonga and Venda.
Nguni is divided into four groups namely: The Northern and Central Nguni which is composed of Zulu-speaking people and the Southern Nguni which is composed of Xhosa-speaking people. Zulu is considered to be the largest ethnic group in South Africa with an estimated total population of more than 10 million people, while Xhosa comes second with an estimated total population of more than 8 million people.
