There are two (2) countries in Australia namely Australia and New Zealand. Although some people would beg to differ and would say that Australia has only one country which is Australia or some would say that Australia has three which adds Papua New Guinea to the original list.
To clarify this answer, Australia would actually consist of three (3) or more countries if we are to use the term Australasia – this means Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea are considered to part of the same group or continent. However, if we are to follow the term regions of the Australian continent and not Oceania, it excludes Papua New Guinea as part of the Australian continent but rather part of Melanesia.
