Tear gas is a chemical compound, which is often used as a weapon. Unlike how the name suggests, tear gas is not a gas. Instead, it is a powder, or it can sometimes be drops of liquid. Similar to pepper spray, the chemicals found in the power cause pain to the eyes. The chemicals found in tear gas are CS gas and phenacyl chloride (CN).
Tear gas can cause temporary blindness, which can last up to 45 minutes. Like pepper spray, tear gas is commonly used by police to control crowds in settings like concerts or protests. It can sometimes be used in war to hinder the opposing side.
