Hyenas are a carnivorous mammal that first came to be in Europe. There is scientific proof that dog-like hyenas existed 15 million years ago but became extinct when extreme climate changes occurred. The hyena soon came into existence and is now found in most parts of Africa and southern parts of Asia.
The hyena family was split into two different groups; the dog-like hyena and the bone crushing hyena. The dog-like hyena has successfully survived for millions of years due to its insectivorous diet. Hyenas have evolved to be largely carnivorous and hunt in groups to feed on large animals such as antelope and wildebeests.
