It depends on what foot you’re interested in. If you’re looking at a wolf’s hind feet, you’ll find four toes on each foot. On the other hand, their forefeet have five toes each - for a total of eighteen toes on a wolf. Unlike humans, the toes are not used for balance or for feeling around in the dark.
A wolf will spread their toes out when they’re walking. Essentially, a wolf’s toes act as a pair of snowshoes on their feet. This allows the wolf not to sink into the snow as they walk or run. Toes are also used to make their legs longer, since a wolf will walk or run on their toes instead of the entire foot.
