Squids have an average of eight legs. Depending on what a squid has gone through in its lifetime, it may lose a few limbs, but they all start with eight legs. These legs are typically in pairs of two, like human legs or other kinds of animal legs. They have two longer tentacles as well, but these longer tentacles aren’t considered legs. They’re used to keep balance and direction in the water.
They’re much like an octopus or other cephalopods in this regard. These legs allow them to swim well in the water. A few species can even appear to be flying in the water due to how they swim. This is usually a rare thing to see, so sometimes it is considered impossible.
