Wellington Zoo currently has 10 chimpanzees. Two have passed away in the past couple of years, which has reduced their numbers. This is one of the largest chimpanzee troupes in the zoos in the area. As part of that, it is the most expensive exhibit to feed in Wellington Zoo. Despite this, it is well worth the cost. The alpha female is named Jessie, and she loves to paint.
This is just one example of how the chimpanzees thrive at Wellington Zoo, with interaction not only from other chimpanzees in the enclosure, but with humans teaching them how to use the tools. Her artwork can be seen at the Wellington Zoo, which adds to the experience of seeing chimpanzees in captivity.
