Depending on what situation is being talked about, there could be more than four million animals being put to sleep. The most recent statistic for the United States, however, states that 2.7 million cats and dogs alone are being put to sleep every year by shelters that are too full. Considering that rabbits, snakes, and other pets are also taken to shelters, that number is considerably low for it to be all of the animals in the United States.
The number increases again when considering how many animals are put to sleep world wide in shelters. The reason for so many pets being put down every year is a sad one. When shelters are too full, they only allow pets to stay for three days. After that, it’s lights out.
