In this context, ELF stands for extremely low frequency. ELF fields include alternating current fields and other electromagnetic, non-ionizing radiation. These forms of radiation can range from 1 Hz to 300 Hz, and are produced by numerous sources. Power lines, electrical wiring, and electrical equipment all produce ELF fields of 60 Hz. Research is still being done to determine the effects of prolonged exposure to ELF radiation.
Current research is focused on possible reproductive, carcinogenic, and neurological effects. However, there are other suggested health effects of ELF radiation, including cardiovascular issues, effects on the brain and human behavior, and even changes to hormone levels and the immune system. Until further research is done, however, it’s impossible to determine what the effects of ELF truly are.
