Every year between ages 20-39, then yearly afterward.
The general recommendation is to have a full-body skin exam every 3 years when you are between the ages of 20 and 39. For those age 40 or older, annual exams are generally recommended. However, these are just general guidelines, and they may not apply to you if you have a history of skin cancer or if you have an immediate family member with a history of skin cancer; for these individuals, exams every 6 to 12 months may be necessary.
But the most important skin exam you can receive is a self-exam. The majority of melanomas are found by the individual or one of their family members. You know your body best, so you are more likely to recognize an abnormal spot or changes in a mole. Perform self-exams regularly and speak to a dermatologist if anything seems out of the ordinary.
