Every five years. For the average adult who is over 20 years of age and who do not have any cardiovascular diseases, you should have your cholesterol levels checked at least once every 5 years. If an individual is diagnosed with high cholesterol or another, related problem, more frequent cholesterol tests may be necessary. Depending on your situation, you may need to have a doctor testing your cholesterol levels every year.

If you have a history of high cholesterol in your family, adults and children alike should be tested every 2 years. Older women who have gone through menopause should be checked every 1 to 2 years, especially if they are experiencing any symptoms of high cholesterol. Speak to your doctor to learn how often you should have your cholesterol levels tested.
