Ruhollah khomeini-ruhollah khomeini. ( juan cole; engaging the muslim world; palgrave macmillan; new york : 2009; p.201.)
-this wasnt a surprising statement to come from the leader of the 1979 revolution as israel had been a firm ally of both the u.s. and the shah.
-according to cole, ahmadinejad quoted this statement in 2005 yet wire service translators rendered khomeinis statement into english as israel must be wiped off the face of the map. yet, khomeini had referred to the occupation regime not israel , and while he expressed a wish for the regime to go away he didnt threaten to go after israel . in fact, a regime can vanish without any outside attacks, as happened to the shahs regime in iran and to the ussr. it is notable that when khomeini made the statement in the 1980s, there was no international outcry. in fact, in the early 1980s, khomeini supplied israel with petroleum in return for american spare parts for the american-supplied iranian arsenal. as both israel and iran considered saddams iraq a serious enemy, they had a tacit alliance against iraq during the first phase of the iran-iraq war of the 1980s. it should also be noted that ahmadinejad subsequently stated he didnt want to kill any jews but rather he wants a one-state solution to the israel-palestinian conflict. while ahmadinejads preferred solution is a non-starter, israel s refusal to pursue a comprehensive peace creates space for arab hardliners whose agendas do not include a realistic peace with israel .
