For $1.80 a grocer buys a case of fruit which contains 12 dozen. She knows that two dozen will spoil before she sells them.

The correct answer to this question is 24 cents. 1/3 third of the whole $1.80 costs of the case of fruit is 60 cents. Adding these amounts together equals $2.40, which is the revenue or the selling cost. 10 dozen of the fruit are still good, in which the $2.40 must be equally distributed.

To get this amount, one would divide $2.40 by 10, which equals .24 a dozen, which is the answer. Word problems such as these would commonly be found on math tests, relating with finance. High schoolers and college students would be more likely to have these questions appear on a test.
