A modem is a short form of modulator-demodulator. It is a hardware component that connects your computer to other network devices either through a network cable or wireless connection. The first modem was known as Dataphone which was released by AT&T in 1960.

Among the first modems were dial-up, meaning that you have to dial a phone number to connect to an ISP. Dial-up modems also required the full use of local telephone meaning voice call would interrupt internet connection.

Modern modems are typically DSL or cable modems, they are considered broadband device. Modern modems use a wider range of frequencies. This allows it to transfer data at a faster rate, unlike the dial up modems. Modems may also be considered as ADA or DAC because it converts analog signals to digital.
