A cyclone refers to a weather phenomenon in which a system of winds rotates inwardly or around a center of low atmospheric pressure. A cyclone seems like a general term for different kinds of natural occurrences such as tornadoes, extratropical cyclones, and tropical cyclones.
The circulation pattern of a cyclone is different in both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. In the Northern Hemisphere, the circulation pattern of a cyclone is anticlockwise, whereas it is clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.
A tropical cyclone is usually formed over warm ocean waters, and it is characterized by a weather system that is rotating at an area of low atmospheric pressure. A tropical cyclone usually comes with organized thunderstorms. Extratropical cyclones are formed in response to a system of unorganized winds coming from the West. A tornado is a violent windstorm that extends from a thunderstorm to the ground.
