BMI stands for body mass index. Height and weight measurements are used to calculate the body mass index (BMI).
BMI is a measure that uses your height and weight to work out if your weight is healthy. The patient’s weight is measured using a scale, while their height is measured using a platform ruler or tape measure. A patient’s height, weight, and body mass index [BMI] can provide a health care practitioner with important information about their overall health and physical condition. Taking the patient’s height and weight may indicate that the patient is overweight, underweight, or is retaining fluid[edema].
A body mass index is a tool used to assess and monitor changes in body weight. BMI is calculated by dividing an adult’s weight in kilograms by their height in meters squared. i.e. weight (kg)/ [height (m)]2. here are different ranges of BMI
1. A normal BMI range from 18.5-24.9
2. A patient with a BMI of less than 18.5 is underweight
3. A patient with a BMI of 25-29.9 is overweight
4. A BMI greater than 30 –39.9 is considered obsessed
5. 40 and above is considered morbidly obsessed
