The correct answer is option B - ototoxicity
Ototoxicity (toxic to ear) is one of the most severe adverse effects seen with the use of aminoglycosides like gentamicin. It can present as vertigo, tinnitus or hearing lossThis side effect is common in people using diuretics such as loop diuretic used by hypertensive patients. This adverse effect makes aminoglycosides teratogenic.
Other adverse effects of aminoglycosides include: Nephrotoxicity (especially when used with medications such as cephalosporin) and neuromuscular blockade.
Adverse effects such as aplastic anemia, cardiac arrhythmias and seizures are not associated with the use of gentamicin.
Hope this helps.
Ototoxicity-the most significant adverse reactions to gentamicin and other aminoglycosides are ototoxicity (indicated by vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing loss) and nephrotoxicity (indicated by urinary cells or casts, oliguria, proteinuria, and reduced creatinine clearance). these adverse reactions are most common in elderly and dehydrated clients, those with renal impairment, and those receiving concomitant therapy with another potentially ototoxic or nephrotoxic drug. gentamicin isnt associated with aplastic anemia, cardiac arrhythmias, or seizures.
