Psoriasis is an epidermal disorder that triggers skin cells to proliferate and build up faster than normal. This process makes the skin appear in the form of bumpy red patches and covered with white scales.
They can grow anywhere, but they mostly appear on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back. Individuals with psoriasis can also get a type of arthritis known as psoriatic arthritis, which causes pain and swelling of the joints. There are a plethora of medications used to treat psoriatic arthritis. These include Humira, Stelara, Cosentyx, Tremfya, Hydrocortisone, Enbrel, Otezla, and Methotrexate.
Methotrexate is usually given to people with severe psoriasis who have tried other medications, but they do not work, and Methotrexate is a last resort. Sometimes with psoriasis, topical treatments are suggested, such as corticosteroid ointment, topical treatments, coal tar, and vitamin D analogs.
