A missed abortion or missed miscarriage is when the embryo or fetus dies and a miscarriage has not yet occurred. There is early fetal intrauterine death, and products of conception are not expelled.
This type of abortion does not cause symptoms of bleeding or cramps like in other abortions. There may be a dark brown vaginal discharge, pregnancy symptoms, breast soreness, nausea, or negative pregnancy test.
Most miscarriages occur due to the embryo having the wrong number of chromosomes. Miscarriages can often be caused by uterine problems. These women may have endocrine or autoimmune disorders or may be heavy smokers.
