A catheter is put into your body through a puncture site in your groin or arm. When there is bleeding at the site, it may drip or collect in a lump under the skin. In the emergency department, the pressure will be put on the site to stop the bleeding. There are precautions you can take at home to prevent bleeding from occurring again. If it does happen when you are at home, place a clean cloth or gauze over the puncture site.
Hold firm pressure with a gauze pad or a clean washcloth. Do not press too hard. Hold pad down for at least 10 to 15 minutes without letting go. Once the bleeding has stopped, you can release the pressure, but lie on your back with your leg up for 60 minutes.
Apply gloves and assess the groin site-observing standard precautions is the first priority when dealing with any blood fluid. assessment of the groin site is the second priority. this establishes where the blood is coming from and determineshow much blood has been lost. the goal in this situation is to stop the bleeding. the nurse would call for help if it were warranted after the assessment of the situation. after determining the extent of the bleeding, vital signs assessment is important. the nurse should never move the client, in case a clot has formed. moving can disturb the clot and cause rebleeding.
