The term “postpartum” refers to the period of time after the birth of a child. It is usually the immediate time after giving birth. Other terms are often included with the term “postpartum.” One is called postpartum depression which is when a woman who gives birth may experience a period of depression or sadness.

There are other problems that a woman may feel after giving birth. These problems may only affect her body and not her baby’s. One of those problems may be endometritis which is an enflamed condition of the uterus. An infection may have occurred during the birthing process resulting in this inflammation. If a pregnant woman gives birth after being in labor for thirty hours, she may experience this inflammation.

Endometritis

Endometritis is an infection of the uterine lining and can occur after prolonged rupture of membranes. Endometriosis does not occur after a strong labor and prolonged rupture of membranes. Salpingitis is a tubal infection and could occur if endometritis is not treated. Pelvic thrombophlebitis involves a clot formation but it is not a complication of prolonged rupture of membranes.
