Ovarian cycle: the hypothalamus stimulate the pituitary gland to release Follicular Stimulating Hormone and Leutenizing Hormone which stimulates the development of an egg in the ovary. The developing follicle secretes estrogen and progesterone. At ovulation (day 14), the developed egg is released. Corpus Luteum continue to secrete estrogen and progesterone, if fertilization does not occur corpus luteum degenerates and the cycle starts all over again.
Uterine cycle: the uterus appears different at several stages of the menstrual cycle.
Menstrual period: this is a period where the uterine wall is sloughed off. This period varies between 1 to 7 days in women.
Proliferative phase: occurs after the menstrual period, the uterus prepares for possible pregnancy. This period last till the 13th day of the menstrual cycle. Follicular phase can vary in length.
Secretory phase: secretory phase is 14 days. It is constant in length. The endometrium continues to thicken, preparing for possible fertilization.
