Axial skeleton, think of an invisible y-axis on the body. It's around the torso, and it does not include the pelvic gridle, head or scapula as these are the starting points for the Appendicular Skeleton.

Appendicular: appendages. It contains appendages in the body as well as their points of attachment (pelvic girdle, scapula, etc.)
