The correct answer is 8 seconds
The time that will elapse before the two cars can collide is 8 seconds. If both cars are 400 meters apart and one travels at 30meters/sec and the other travels at 20meters/sec. We can determine the time required to collide by finding the value of X in the equation below:
30x + 20x = 400
Where X is the time required to cover the 400 meters before they collide.
50x = 400
Divide both sides by 50
50x/50 = 400/50
X = 8
Final answer: 8 seconds

The correct answer to this question is If two cars are 400 meters apart and a collision occurs while one is traveling east at 30 meters per second and the other is traveling west at 20 meters per second, you would need to solve for x to find out how much time elapsed before the two cars collided.

The correct answer to this question is If two cars are 400 meters apart and a collision occurs
To do this, you would multiply one speed of 30 by the time of x to the other speed of 20 to the time of x to equal the distance of 400 meters. When you add the 30x and the 20x, you get 50x. You would then need to divide 400 by 50 to get x which equals 8 seconds.

30x+20x=400 where x equals the number of seconds and 400 is the amount both cars need to travel to collide (Since they are apart 400 meters)

50x=400

x=8, therefore, 8 seconds will pass before the two cars collide
