The Industrial Revolution changed the world in a way that hitherto could hardly be imagined. The slow, rural life, dependent upon weather and peasant labour, with a clear hierarchy of roles in society, now gave way to a rushed and urgent lifestyle where workers had to clock on, work with noisy machines and gain new skills, often with elements of danger in their everyday work. The focus was on production and speed, plus new faster forms of transport.
