Khmer Rouge sounds like a restaurant chain but actually refers to a ruling movement which made life in Cambodia utterly miserable. For four years Pol Pot, a Marxist leader, tried to force his people back into rural agricultural practices.
He had been influenced by seeing the self sufficiency of hill tribes in the remote north east of his country. Under the mental sway of Chinese communists Pol Pot thought the lack of materialism would benefit the country, so forced his countrymen back from the cities. They died in large numbers from exhaustion and abuse.
