Based on recent studies, the growth hormone deficiency is the most common hormone deficiency that occurs in patients with brain cancer that undergoes intracranial radiation therapy. Most often, this hormone deficiency is diagnosed in cancer patients that experienced long exposures to high-dose radiation therapy on the hypothalamus.
Radiation-induced growth hormone deficiency can develop in various settings. However, is it mostly seen in patients with CNS tumors after undergoing localized radiation therapy for face, carcinomas of the orbit, sarcomas and nasopharynx.
Other side effects of radiation therapy include skin problems, fatigue, hair loss, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, and low blood cell counts.
