The Supreme Court decision declaring state-mandated school segregation to be unconstitutional
The Supreme Court decision on May 17, 1954, declaring racially segregated public schools as unconstitutional was a landmark decision that led to the expansion of civil rights in the 1950’s.
The historic ruling in the case of Brown vs. The Board of Education of Topeka overturned the Supreme Court decision on the 1896 case (Plessy vs. Ferguson) which ruled that the public school segregation laws were constitutional based on the “separate but equal” doctrine.
The Brown vs. The Board of Education of Topeka was a class-action suit that was filed against The City of Topeka’s Board of Education. The case was filed by 13 Topeka residents who were filling the case on behalf of their children.
