A GABA receptor is a special receptor, found on the surfaces of many cells. The GABA receptor allows GABA or benzodiazepines to bind to them. This is because benzodiazepines have a similar configuration to the GABA neurotransmitter. They can go and attach to the receptor, in effect blocking the action.

The GABA receptor is an excitatory receptor as GABA is an excitatory neurotransmitter. It is an efficient chemical that works to initiate certain events and actions in the body. GABA is popularly known as an excitatory neurotransmitter, which results in a variety of functions according to the connection of the receptor.
