This quote comes from Cheever, the court clerk, and it is said to John. He wants to make sure that there is a good and fair trial. This is because the entire situation is caused by irrational fear. There’s nothing about the witch trials (since the Crucible is about the Salem witch trials, for those that don’t know) that is completely sensible.

This important aspect of the story needs to be remembered when talking about quotes from Cheever. He is the sensible, no-nonsense person in the sea of nonsensical witch accusations.

However, this is all that Cheever wants. He wants to make sure anyone accused gets the proper fair trial that they deserve. There’s little that he doesn’t want to see in the courtroom, but he is not happy with these trials.

The person who has stated this is Ezekiel Cheever. He is the clerk of the court in Salem where the witch trials have occurred. He is very upright. His main goal is to provide a fair trial to truly get the justice that people deserve. He said the statement mentioned above to John.

John Proctor is a character in the story who is considered to be troubled. He had an affair with Abigail and because of this affair, his whole view about himself has changed for the worse. He also believes that God and his wife have forsaken him because of the wrong things that he has done.
