Yes, mechanical waves need a medium through which momentum and energy transfer. A mechanical wave, as opposed to an electromagnetic wave, is a wave that is a vibration in matter, transferring energy through something material. Electromagnetic waves can travel through the vacuum of space to reach us from the sun.
