Cassie having to climb up a pole to pick cotton. In the beginning of chapter 2 of the book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Big Ma was worried that Cassie might fall from the pole while picking cotton. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is a novel written in 1976 by Mildred D.

Taylor, an African-American writer that is known for her writings about the struggles that African-American families experience in the Deep South. The story of the book tackles the racism that occurred during the Great Depression in Northern America. The book talks about life in Southern Mississippi where many people were persecuted because of their race and the color of their skin.
