The heart valves oversee making sure that the blood will flow one way. Can you imagine if your clean blood and dirty blood will mix? This can cause a lot of problems for sure because the different organs of your body will be exposed to dirty blood. There are four valves that are available.

Each valve will make sure that blood will only flow in the right direction. Remember that the blood will still not flow in the reverse position even when the heart is at rest because of the pulmonary and aortic valves. Those who have issues with their heart valves should seek medical attention immediately to prevent their condition from becoming worse.

The one-way valve is called the tricuspid valve which is located in the middle of the right atrium and the right ventricle. The blood should only move in a certain direction to ensure that it will enter and exit at the right places.

Another valve that will make sure that the blood will flow properly in one direction is the mitral valve. This is situated right in the middle of the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery. Backward blood flow is bad for the rest of the body because this means that the other organs will not be getting enough blood and oxygen in order to function properly.

The one-way valves that prevent blood flow to the opposite direction are aortic and pulmonary valves. These valves are located between the atria of the upper chambers and the ventricles of the lower chambers. Without these valves, the blood flowing through the heart can easily flow in the opposite direction.

The opening and closing of the aortic and pulmonary valves occur by a forward and backward pressure that pushes against the valves. This shows that muscle contraction doesn't cause the valves to open and close. The valves are attached to the papillary muscles. The pulmonary valve can be found between the pulmonary artery and the right ventricle. There are about three cusps inside the pulmonary valve.

Also, the aortic valve can be found between the aorta and the left ventricle. The aortic valve also consists of three cusps: left, right, and posterior. The pulmonary and aortic valves are very important as they prevent the backflow of blood into the ventricles.

Valves are situated at the exit and entrance area of the heart for the same purposes, and the purpose is to ensure that the blood moves in one path. The valves situated at these points are called the pulmonary and aortic valves. These are one-way valves that inhibit the blood from moving all the way through the heart in the reverse direction when the heart is at rest. Valves in the heart open and close passively, not through muscle contraction. They open when forward pressure pushes against them. The valves are linked to muscles, which are called papillary muscles connected to the wall of the ventricle and contract when the heart also contracts. The heart is essential because it pumps blood around your body, delivering oxygen and nutrients to your cells, and eliminating waste products.
