Gloomy, and forbidding. This question is related to the play, The Crucible, which was written by Arthur Miller. It was first published in 1953. The Crucible has a narrator, who often gives the audience and/or reader background information about the character.

The protagonist of the play is John Proctor who admitted to the court that he and Abigal Williams had an affair. In the end, Procter dies rather than committing the attempts he made to try and expose Abigal. The play went on to win a Tony award and is studied in many English classes.
