Williamsburg is best known for being the place in which the birth of independence changed the nation forever. General George Washington established the continental army in Williamsburg in 1781 for the siege of nearby Yorktown. It is the place that preserves the preservation and understanding of American colonial history.
Many important conventions were held in Williamsburg. In the historic area of Colonial Williamsburg, the city's railroad station was refurbished to become an individual passenger facility. Jamestown was also the first permanent English- speaking settlement in the New World, which was founded in 1607.
It was also a place for higher learning, as many of the world's most outstanding leaders came from William and Mary's college, such as President Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and John Tyler. It was the most impressive of the British colonies in America. In these modern times, Colonial Williamsburg is Virginia's best tourist attraction.
