Dentin is one of the four components of teeth. The other three are pulp, enamel, and cementum. 45% of the dentin is hydroxylapatite, 33% is organic material, and 22% is water. Dentin is yellow in color. It is often confused with enamel, but dentin is different because it forms throughout life and it is sensitive.
There are three types of dentin. Primary is the most prominent in teeth. It is between the enamel and pulp chamber. The secondary dentin is formed after the formation of the root is completed. The tertiary dentin comes from a reaction to wear over time and cavities.
